Excessive Worry or Generalised Anxiety
At Elevated Wellbeing our therapists are experienced in providing therapy for excessive worry and counselling for anxiety in Newcastle and online. Everybody experiences worry or nervousness throughout their life, particularly when there is a big event coming up. Such as starting a new job, public speaking, going on a date, being in a grand-final or meeting the in-laws for the first time. Having some anxiety is helpful and a natural, healthy response to stressful situations as it gives us energy and focus for the event.
However, for a lot of people anxiety can become persistent and all-consuming and make us over-analyze or catastrophize situations. While having some worry or anxiety is helpful, when anxiety interferes with a person’s life or wellbeing, causes distress, or takes away from someone’s quality of life it is may be an anxiety disorder.
Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
The most common anxiety diagnosis is called generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) which is where people experience excessive worries and a tendency to ‘catastrophise’ upcoming events or things that have happened. Some common themes are worrying about work or school, health, income, safety, social issues, or issues where there is uncertainty, or where people may have limited control over the situation.
The anxiety associated with these worries can lead to physical and emotional symptoms such as difficulties with sleep and concentration, feeling sick, hot or irritable, muscle tension, avoiding anxiety provoking situations, withdrawing from events, seeking reassurance, procrastination or perfectionism. Sometimes the worrying thoughts and symptoms can be so persistent that they interfere with productivity and performance at work or school and get in the way of living an enjoyable and value-filled life.
